The “race” to see which manufacturer could build the fastest and most powerful performance car was at its zenith between ’67-’70. Each year the horsepower seemed to be getting higher, with each of the “Big Three” offering their “ultimate” version of muscle car!

Over at Chevrolet, there were many models to choose from. Camaro, Nova, Impala and of course, Corvette all had their HiPo versions on offer. But the King in ’68 (as well as ’67 and ’69) was the Corvette L88! Unless you were a professional (or armature for that matter) racer, few knew about this ultra-high-performance and very expensive option. But for the ones that did know and checked RPO L88 and their dealer order for, they got a heavy duty cast iron 427ci big block engine, with special crank, cam, pistons, intake manifold and aluminum heads, among other things. The engine was mated to a heavy duty M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-spd. manual transmission and rode on a special and brakes.

Chevrolet really didn’t want the general public to know about this very special Corvette. So, when it was advertised, the listed hp was “only” 430. That was 5hp less than the L71 427. The powers that be were hoping that most would opt for the “more powerful” L71. So much so, that the L88 wasn’t available with a fan shroud or radio. The reality was that the L88 in race trim put our closer to 560hp! For the most part, the plan worked. There were only 20 L88’s produced in ’67, 80 in ’68 and 116 in ’69, making it one of the rarest and most coveted engines ever offered in a Corvette!

The absolutely spectacular ’68 presented here is one of the most correct examples you’ll ever see for sale! Not only has it been meticulously frame-off restored, but it also happens to have its original, C.C.A.S. certified engine still under the hood! This is almost unheard of with L88’s as most were raced hard and put away wet (and broken). Add to the equation the factory documentation, which includes Window Sticker and Protect-O-Plate, PDI, original title, C.C.A.S. engine pad and Trim Tag certification, featured magazine articles, and you’ve got an ultra-collectible Corvette that was at the panicle of performance, in the era of the muscle car wars!
