1964 Shelby Cobra 289
CSX2438. Red with black interior. Billed to Shelby American May 14, 1964, shipped to L.A. on May 26 aboard the “SS Diemerdyk”. 2438 was invoiced on September 2nd, 1964 to Hi-Performance Motors (Los Angeles, CA). “1 Cobra-Ford chassis #CSX2438, Red/ black ($5,195.00); with Class “A” accessories, including WSW tires, less luggage rack ($250.50) antifreeze ($3.55); and 5 chrome wheels ($105); for a total of $5,554.05.

The car was picked up at Shelby American and was sold on November 4, 1964 to Geoffrey Prendergast (Inglewood, CA), with a hard top, deluxe side curtains, 2 Talbot Side mirrors and a Blaupunkt AM-FM radio, for $6,900.00 including sales tax ($264.12) and DMV fees ($33). Registered with the CA plate “PAH 337”, 2438 was driven for a year and a half before Pendergast returned it to Shelby American and requested installation of a full race 289 engine. The completed upgrade was billed out on June 2nd 1966, including a competition clutch, scattershield drag headers and an alloy oil pan, at a total cost of $1,762.77.In the early 1970s, Mike McCluskey (Torrance, CA) added an oil cooler, oil cooler scoop and rounded flares.

CSX 2438 was acquired at an auction in the spring of 1987 by the Chequered Flag (Beverly Hills, CA). They traded it to Jack Cowell (NY) in a deal that valued the Cobra at roughly $75K. Cowell originally intended to race 2438, but changed his mind as Cobra prices escalated. Cowell sold the car to Laury Scott (Mountain View, CA) on April 25, 1988. Scott brought it to SAAC-13 (Santa Rosa, CA) in July 1988, with 5-spoke American wheels and 153,000 miles on the odometer.

Between 1990 and 1991 2438 was Restored by Dan Fodge (Rancho Cordova, CA). It was repainted red, with a black interior, a hood scoop, 6.5"/8.5" FIA Halibrands, Webers, and a chrome roll bar. lt bore the license plate COBRA LS at SAAC-17 (Portland, OR). In July 1992, 2438 took 1st Place in the 260/289 Cobra popular vote class. This was followed by 1st place, popular vote, at the second annual Ford Fever Sunday sponsored by the River City Region (Sacramento) of SAAC (September 1992); 1st place, popular Vote, 289 Cobra class. 1993 Nor-Cal Region Mini-Nats; 2nd place, popular vote 1994 Mini-Nats; and appearance in the September 1993 and October 1994 issues of Cobra magazine. In 2007, the Cobra was purchased by Mel Jacobs (Houston, TX).
