Renault 16 TX 5-speed from the last series. Originating from Portugal and excellently maintained. After many dry years, the TX was imported into the Netherlands in 2019 by a Renault enthusiast. You will surely remember this car from the past – the R16 was a successful French mid-size car with many innovative features. And in the stylish TX version, it also had a truly striking presence. A big difference compared to the standard 16: twin headlights, green-tinted glass, sporty wheels, rear wiper, and as a finishing touch, the ultra-thin stainless-steel rear spoiler.

The exterior is neat and was resprayed in the past in the beautiful original color “Santonge metal verni,” which was done well. Due to the Portuguese sun, there is a slight variation in color tone, but only the picky will notice. The doors close perfectly and the panel gaps are correct. All weak spots have been carefully addressed in the Netherlands. Inner fenders have been fitted to protect the rear, and part of the engine bay has been professionally repainted. The floors and engine bay therefore look very good. The rear doors have a few spots. It’s an honest TX — and where do you still find one of those?

The interior is in very nice condition. The fabric upholstery was renewed in the past, and the seats were re-padded at the time. The dashboard is original, the beautiful Jaeger instruments have refurbished orange needles, and everything works as it should. Even the electric windows and central locking function perfectly. The “sporty” steering wheel is also beautiful, giving the car a true seventies vibe.

Technically, this 16 TX is in excellent condition, which is clear when driving it. The last owner had everything done that was needed by a Renault 16 specialist. The gearbox was overhauled, including a new clutch. It shifts excellently, though there is a light sound in 5th gear, which will not prevent the car from lasting for many years. Other new parts include the water pump, radiator and hoses, brake pressure regulator, ignition switch, light-combination switch, starter motor, and temperature sensor. It has new tires all around, 1-2-3 electronic ignition, and the valves were recently adjusted with fresh oil in both the engine and gearbox. The alternator with voltage regulator has also been recently replaced, and the brake fluid renewed.

Renault was once a true engine builder, and Gordini modified the famous 1647 cc aluminum engine to produce 90 hp with low fuel consumption. The cylinder head features a semi-hemispherical combustion chamber, thanks to V-shaped valves with a central spark plug — straight from the textbook. The engine in this TX delivers remarkable torque, making the car feel surprisingly quick.

The Renault 16 was named Car of the Year in 1966. With its distinctive design and innovations such as the fifth door with folding rear seat, front-wheel drive, lightweight aluminum engine with wet liners, and many more clever ideas, this mid-size car was far ahead of most of its competitors. Built for 13 years, but now hardly any remain, as rust was its biggest enemy in Northern Europe. Note: offered for sale by private owner, on consignment, without warranty.
