The construction series with the internal designation W123 is the most built Mercedes-Benz ever. It was a car that belonged to the upper middle class and counts as the predecessor of the later E-class build series. Its predecessors are the W114 (six-cylinder models) and the W115 (four-cylinder and diesel models), also called "Strich Acht" (/8), after the 1968 appearance year. Both its predecessor and its successor, the W124, both ran off the production line a year parallel to the W123. The W123 series set new standards in vehicle safety and was one of the first estate cars in its class, as well as the first Mercedes Benz passenger car with a turbo-diesel engine. From pre-production, which began in November 1975, to production end in January 1986, almost 2.7 million cars came off the assembly line. The series is considered the epitome of reliability and longevity within the automotive world. The series became so popular that in the early years there were even long waiting lists, sometimes lasting more than two years.
