The introduction of a new engine and several refinements and improvements. For model year 1986, seven versions were produced for the US market. Volkswagen sold 12,288 Vanagons in the US that year. The Vanagon stands out for its angular design and vertical nose, equipped with the rectangular headlights newly introduced in 1986 with additional square main beams. Two grilles are present: one for interior ventilation and one for the front-mounted radiator. The straight chrome bumper frames the front and a large windscreen gives a view of the cab-forward dashboard and steering wheel. The sharp corners of the front doors are 'flag-shaped' with narrow entry at the bottom - typical of the shape around the wheel arches. A sliding door allows easy access to the rear seats. At the rear, low rear lights provide space at the large lid, with low loading sill. The front seats are finished in grey fabric with armrests on both sides .The middle bench consists of two fixed seats, and the rear seats accommodate three people with ample head and legroom. The suspension consists of coil springs at the front and independent semi-trailing arms with springs at the rear.
