The Saab 900 classic was designed as a higher-end replacement for the Saab 99. The first Saab 900 classic was presented in May 1978. The Saab 900 has had many changes throughout its history. In 1984, for instance, the first 900 classic came out with 16-valve engine alongside the 8-valve engine, after which the 8-valve engine went out of production in 1987. In 1987, the grille and front was changed and in 1988, the rim pitch was changed. 908,810 units of the first-generation 900 were produced. The hatchback ran off the production line until the end of 1993, while the convertible was built until mid-1994. Production of the sedan had already ended by the end of 1991.
