Chassis No. 218979DN Engine No. LB78839 Jaguar’s Mark II arrived in 1959, marking the first major makeover of the compact 2.4 and 3.4 saloon line since its debut in 1955. The new Mark II had revised styling with the familiar voluptuous profile, and enough significant refinements to warrant a new name. The compact Jaguar saloon had long been a sporting favorite, but the Mark II, with its improved suspension, Dunlop disc brakes, and particularly the potent 3.8-litre XK engine, redefined the concept of the sports saloon. It was described by Autocar magazine as “One of the most impressive sights today is the rapid and purposeful progress of a Mark 2 Jaguar on a motorway, eating up the miles in the fast lane. Like the nose of a bullet, the rounded frontal shape looks right for high speed, and the sheer velocity attained is usually exhilarating” Presented in Opalescent Silver Grey over a rich Burgundy leather cabin, this 1961 Mark II 3.8 exemplifies the timeless appeal of Jaguar’s seminal sports saloon. This left-drive car is in the ultimate configuration for the enthusiast, combining the 3.8-litre XK engine with a four-speed manual gearbox and Laycock overdrive. Previous owners report this car was in the Los Angeles, California area when it was restored some years ago, and was later offered by Heritage Classics Motorcar Company. It was brought to Europe in the early 2000s, and since 2009 it has been in the care of a single private owner, its restoration ageing gracefully over the years. The well-appointed cabin features attractive leather upholstery, a correct original steering wheel, and period-correct Motorola radio. Ownership history, previous registrations, and a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate are on file. While in current ownership, this handsome Jaguar has seen limited use over the past decade years mainly remaining on static display in the current owner’s collection, and while it is reported to run well at the time of this writing, further recommissioning may be required before enjoying it on the road, where it will undoubtedly be a most appealing example of Jaguar’s genre-defining sports saloon.
