Chassis No. AR1900C10078 Engine No. AR130810096 Body No. 4640 Often regarded as the most desirable expression of Alfa Romeo’s celebrated 1900, the Touring-bodied 1900C Super Sprint Coupe was produced in just 600 examples between 1955 and 1958, with roughly 200 believed to survive today. With its lively 1,975-cc twin-cam four and Touring’s lightweight Superleggera alloy coachwork, the Super Sprint served as the high-performance flagship of the 1900 range and became one of Alfa Romeo’s most successful postwar designs on demanding events such as the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. This example, chassis number 10078, is a Series III Super Sprint benefiting from the earlier specification that includes Alfa Romeo’s desirable column-shifted five-speed gearbox. Factory documentation from Alfa Romeo Automobilismo Storico (Centro Documentazione) confirms that it was completed on 17 July 1956, fitted with engine number AR130810096, and sold shortly thereafter through Alfa Romeo’s official Paris importer, GAP. First registered in France in July 1956 in the name of Antoine Valette of Paris, it is understood to have remained in France throughout its entire life, save for a temporary period during which the current owner registered the car in Switzerland while abroad. After nearly two decades under its original registration in the Yvelines area, it later passed through further French custodians in Marseille and Lyon, before joining prominent Alfa Romeo Club organizer Francis Fabulet in 1990, who toured with the car during Alfa Romeo’s 80th anniversary celebrations. From 2007, an architect-collector in Belfort briefly owned the Alfa and placed it in storage, emerging a few years later for a comprehensive, body-off restoration completed in early 2013. The Super Sprint was renewed in classic Rosso Amaranto, a rich, Bordeaux-like hue that suits the model’s elegant Touring coachwork and complements its warm beige leather interior. In February 2014, the car was acquired by the current owner, a collector of significant 1950s and 1960s Alfa Romeos, who undertook a complete overhaul of the engine, gearbox, electrical system, and suspension aimed at reliable touring use. Notable improvements during the refurbishment included the fitment of Weber 40 IDF carburetors in place of the original Solex units, a Dynator alternator conversion, and a 123 electronic distributor, along with a new wiring harness. An auxiliary electric cooling fan was also installed to help manage temperatures in modern traffic, while all of the original components are included for those wishing to return the car to original specifications. Supported by invoices documenting the current owner’s careful, ongoing care, this Super Sprint has been enjoyed as intended and successfully completed the 2021 Mille Miglia Storica. Accompanied by French registration and an exceptional dossier that includes Centro Documentazione paperwork confirming its matching-numbers status, a 2014 FIVA passport, a 2021 FFVE certificate, and a 2020 Mille Miglia registry entry, chassis 10078 is an event-ready example with outstanding French provenance from new.
