Chassis No. 17649 Engine No. 00039 Chassis 17649 represents a particularly striking example of Ferrari’s landmark 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, the model that ushered Maranello’s twelve-cylinder road cars into a new mid-engine era. Completed on 5 February 1974, this exceptionally rare right-hand-drive, U.K.-delivery BB is one of just 58 so configured, from total production of 387 examples. Importantly, it retains its matching-numbers engine (no. 00039) and was delivered new in the same stunning specification it presents today, finished in Blu Chiaro (Light Blue) over Beige Connolly leather. Research compiled by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini shows that the car was delivered via Colonel Ronnie Hoare's Maranello Concessionaires Ltd. in Great Britain, and sold in March 1974 to its first owner, Don K. Shead, wearing the original registration “77 D.” A legendary offshore boat racer and designer, Shead is remembered for creating high-performance powerboats for the Uno Embassy Racing Team during the 1970s, a team co-owned by Hoare. He later turned his competitive focus to car racing, including an appearance at the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he finished second in the Group C2 class in a Spice-Cosworth. By the early 1980s, the Boxer had passed to A. G. F. Oldworth and was re-registered as “CJ 15.” Next owner Peter English reregistered the Boxer as “RLJ 565 M” in 1984, followed in 1985 by Roger L. Earl of Surrey, who registered the car as “8332 RE.” The Boxer then appeared for sale in 1994 through Talacrest Ltd., ultimately passing to Christopher Roberts who registered it on its current plates, “DBY 462 M.” Massini’s research notes an interior retrim in Magnolia leather with red inserts during this period, before moving to David Tregar in the late 1990s, and later Ian Entwistle in the early 2000s. In 2006, the Ferrari was registered with Andrew Stear of London. During Stear’s tenure with the Boxer, chassis 17649 was spotted at numerous enthusiast and motorsport gatherings across Europe, including the Ferrari Racing Days at Silverstone in 2007, the Mille Miglia Storica in Brescia and the Ferrari Owners’ Club GB National Meet in 2008, and both the Goodwood Breakfast Club and Goodwood Revival in 2011, by which time it was finished in red with a cream interior. The car was subsequently acquired by Mr. A. Thistlethwayte, who retained it from 2012 to 2022. Upon acquisition, it was initially maintained by Dick Lovett Swindon and Bob Houghton, with the latter carrying out gearbox and speedometer replacements in November 2012 at 42,274 miles indicated. Between 2014 and 2020, chassis 17649 underwent an extensive restoration by marque specialists Keys Motorsport of Silverstone, with costs exceeding £94,000 as documented in detailed invoices on file. During this meticulous process, the Ferrari was returned to its breathtaking as-delivered Blu Chiaro livery with Nero lower body panels and trimmed with a handsome Nero leather interior. Beautifully restored and showing fewer than 1,500 miles since completion, and retaining its matching-numbers engine per Marcel Massini, chassis 17649 is a highly correct example of Ferrari’s landmark flat-twelve 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer. The dramatic Blu Chiaro color scheme accentuates Pininfarina’s razor-edged wedge silhouette and would make a truly standout entry at Ferrari Owners’ Club GB events or any number of road rallies.
