Chassis No. 85126 Designed to compete with Delahaye and Talbot, the Salmson 2300 S is the final model to come out of the Boulogne-Billancourt factory. At the time, it took part in all the major competitions: the 2300 S stood out at the Coupe des Alpes, the Liège-Rome-Liège, the Monte Carlo Rally, the Lyon-Charbonnières Rally, and the Mille Miglia. One of them was even entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955. Originally acquired by Paul Mazaud, a Salmson dealer in Nantes, and registered on 18 November 1954, under the number 995 CJ 44 to serve as a demonstration car, the 2300 S with chassis number 85126 was quickly sold in May 1955 to Stanislas Motte, residing in Tourcoing, who registered it under the number 804 BE 59, a photocopy of which is included in the file. He then took the wheel in 1956 to compete in the Tour de France Automobile under start number 68 and the Lyon-Charbonnières Rally under number 109. Numerous photographs of the car in both events are available in the Maurice Louche Archives. The car became later in 1967 the property of Mr. Letreguilly, who registered it in Loire-Atlantique under the number 595 FT 44. In 2004, Nicolas Vallez, a member of the Amicale Salmson, acquired the 2300 S to restore its former glory. It was then registered as 2300 XM 02. He first undertook an extensive restoration campaign, during which the car was fitted with its original engine, before entering it in the Mille Miglia in 2011 and the Tour Auto in 2014, to name only the most international and prestigious competitions. In 2018, the Salmson changed hands again, crossing the Ardennes to reach its new Belgian owner, who maintained it through Carrosserie Janssens, with invoices available in the file. The following year, it was presented at a public sale, where its current owner purchased it. It has since been stored and will require some care and recommissioning. With its sleek lines, 2328 cc aluminum four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts producing 110 horsepower, paired with a Cotal gearbox allowing it to reach nearly 180 km/h, the Salmson 2300 S is, in a way, a testament to postwar motorsport and the swan song of this now-defunct French brand.
