Chassis No. F1A26283 The year nineteen sixty is fondly remembered by Corvette racing enthusiasts as the year that “America’s Sports Car” arrived from across the pond to do battle at Le Mans. With three 283 cu-in cars arriving with Briggs Cunningham and a single entry from the famous Camoradi team, the United States was well represented with their V8 rumble with a Cunningham car finishing first in class and the Camoradi entry 10th on distance. Quite the debut! It goes without saying that the marque is the epitome of full-throated American performance and, for many in the United States, the first choice when building a vintage racing car. While the Corvette is less common outside of America, it certainly has its proponents elsewhere with few more prominent than Tom Falconer. Falconer is best known for his originality guides on the correct restorations of Corvettes and Claremont Corvette yet he, along with Bernie Chodosh, teamed to restore and build this competition focused example for vintage racing in the mid-2000s. Chodosh had previously acquired the car from the United States and over a period of 12 months the car was converted to an attractive period specification. Beginning with the frame, now stamped “F1A26283,” all manner of racing modifications were made that are said to include reinforcements and strengthening gussets, racing suspension set up and drilled drum brakes. The racer is powered by a 283 cu-in (4.7-liter) V8 producing an impressive 400 horsepower far outstripping even the fuel injected examples from the period and mated to an alloy-cased four-speed manual transmission able to handle the power. The car was raced by the pair of Falconer and “Sideways” Chodosh at numerous events once receiving the car’s FIA paperwork in 2007. A trip to Le Mans in 2007 for the Le Mans Legends event—just as the Cunningham and Camoradi Corvettes did nearly 50 years earlier—was a highlight. So too was a 6-Hour race at Spa-Francorchamps in 2008, the 2009 Silverstone Classic, and events at Brands Hatch, Snetterton, and Crystal Palace with the car familiar to all who attended for the rumble of its V8 and blue smoke emanating from its rear tires with its massive “small” block grunt. Chodosh and Falconer parted ways with their Corvette racer in 2009 with it joining a private collection of cars noted for its depth of marque and quality. In 2011 the car was granted its U.K V5 registration papers registered on “558 YUM” number plates. Today, with EU-taxes paid, it is offered from that very same collection, resplendent in its period-appropriate racing colors of gold and red with the consigning specialist noting it as a strong runner with a very responsive engine.
