Officially unveiled at the 2006 Paris Auto Show, the Audi R8 drew inspiration from both the 2003 Audi Le Mans quattro concept and the exceptional R8 endurance prototype that had dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times in a row. The R8 came in both Coupe and Spyder form and offered a choice of 4.2-liter FSI V8 or 5.2-liter FSI V10 power, paired to Audi's quattro all-wheel drive. The R8 was designed, developed, and hand-assembled by Audi Sport in Neckarsulm, Germany, and featured Audi's advanced Space Frame aluminum monocoque, delivering exceptional rigidity and balance. Based on the same platform as the Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8 was praised for its remarkable driving dynamics-so much so that six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx famously declared it “the best handling road car today.”
