The 3.2 Carrera is revered as the ultimate development of the original 911 that first appeared in 1963. These final cars (before being replaced by the more complicated 964) were the most flexible and usable of Butzi Porsche's original design. Developed under the watchful eye of Porsche Chief Executive Peter Schutz, the 911 Carrera 3.2 made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show of September 1983. With the SC badge now dropped, the venerated ‘Carrera’ badge was reinstated, for the first time since 1977.
Estimated to be 80% new, the model's all-alloy, flat-six engine, which had been fuel-injected since 1971, received a final stretch to 3164cc, giving a torque-rich 231bhp, it proved both rev-happy and flexible - enough to propel the lithe and slippery coupé to over 150mph, with 0-60mph coming up in 5.6 seconds. To cope with the increased performance, the brakes were enlarged and the top two gear ratios slightly raised. Among other improvements was a redesigned timing chain tensioner, the Achilles heel of the earlier engines while 1987 to 1989 models had the stronger and more user-friendly Getrag G50 gearbox in which reverse was located beside the fifth ratio. All 3.2 Carreras feature galvanised bodies, which together with Porsche's legendary build quality, ensure that these classics are long-lasting.
Built to a simpler, lighter specification than those headed to some other countries and unaffected by the heavy pedal offset which blighted every right-hand drive incarnation of the 911 up until the 996, German-market (or ‘C00’) cars have long been revered by marque purists.
The car presented here is a C00 (home-market) 1989-model year, this being the absolute end of 911 G-series production with these final cars being much sought-after. This desirable 'last of the line' Carrera 3.2 Targa with the preferred G50 manual gearbox was supplied new via Porsche Zentrum Nürnberg-Fürth-Erlangen in April 1989 – to our vendor, quite remarkably! He has owned this Targa from new, some 37 years of ownership and such custodianship is very special and to be appreciated. Original, honest, wholesome, unmolested, genuine and more…this is a very special 3.2.
The story is that our vendor was working in Germany in the 1980s and his daily route to work took him passed Porsche Zentrum Nürnberg, whereupon one day he ventured in and requested a car. The salesman was keen to promote the newly launched 964 but our savvy vendor wanted ‘a proper Porsche’ and spec’d this 3.2, it being one of the very last examples available. He used it for only a matter of months in Germany, before life and work took him back to the UK, the car being first registered here in the December of 1989.
He has lavished much care on it ever since, it being garaged, serviced, and maintained to an exacting level. It has never been painted, restored, or taken apart travelling a conservative 31,000 miles and the car’s condition is absolutely commensurate with this mileage, ownership and care.
Passing its MOT this month, with no advisories, this is an absolute ‘template’ 3.2. With Targas now back in-vogue and Stone Grey Metallic helping the understated cool-factor, this car is also nicely spec’d, including heated and 8-way adjustable electric seats, gearbox short shift and a sound system.
Accompanied by its original sales invoice, complete book-pack, both keys, jack, and numerous invoices/MOT certificates, this is a car for the Porsche aficionado. We welcome any inspection, you will not be disappointed.
