Following Packard's traditional off-sequence model schedule, the 11th Series debuted in mid-1933 for the 1934 model year. With its subtle styling refinements, notably fuller, skirted front fenders, the 11th Series is often considered the quintessential Classic Era American car. The Twelve returned as the flagship, with its glorious 445.5 cubic-inch L-head V12 delivering 160 horsepower. The power and refinement made it a favorite among owner/drivers of its time – and with today's enthusiasts. With coachwork and wheelbase options to suit a wide array of customer needs, the Packard Twelve was a machine built for effortless progress in unparalleled style.
This 1934 Packard Twelve Model 1107 is a stunning example of the rare Formal Sedan. Similar to the Club Sedan, the Formal Sedan is distinguished by its coachman's leather roof and divider window. Of the 960 Eleventh Series Twelves produced in total, experts estimate just over 30 wore this body style.
The restoration was completed in the mid-1990s by Jocko's Restoration of Dearborn, Michigan, at a reported cost of $250,000. Beautifully preserved in current ownership, this is likely one of the finest Formal Sedans extant, with beautiful finishes, superb panel fit, and doors that shut with vault-like precision. Light grey wool upholstery is restored to similarly high standards, with the understated opulence of couch-like seats, brushed nickel hardware, and personal vanity sets. Accessories include dual side-mounts with painted metal covers, chrome wheels with Firestone wide whitewalls, factory radio, chassis ride control, and a fold-out windscreen. Recent tests have shown the car to be in superb running order – on the button, and with silken delivery.
A standout among its peers, few automobiles of the era could touch the Packard Twelve for its performance, quality, and striking presence, as this gorgeous – and rare – Formal Sedan demonstrates.
