Named in honor of Juan Manuel Fangio and Jean Behra's victory at the 1957 12 Hours of Sebring, the Maserati 3500 GTi Sebring was conceived as a 2+2 grand touring car and carried over the mechanical foundations of its recent predecessor, the 3500 GTI, with a tubular chassis and a fuel-injected 3.5-liter inline-six producing 235 Italian cavalli vapore horsepower, dressed by the great designer Giovanni Michelotti for Carrozzeria Vignale.
One of only 348 Series I Sebrings produced, this example was delivered new in July 1963 to the charming Italian city of Perugia. It was finished in Grigio Montebello over a black Pelle Nera leather interior and equipped with five Borrani wheels and its tool kit, as confirmed by a copy of its original Avviso Spedizione, the delivery note provided by Maserati Classiche.
Registered in France as “7048 QM 31” from March 1967 through the early 2000s in the Occitanie region, according to the original French registration certificate that accompanies it, this Sebring was later acquired by a Belgian owner and underwent a comprehensive restoration around 2010, very much taking into account the originality of the car. The interior remains lovely original, and the car kept its original Lucas Injection system that mostly disappears in restorations.
The work was carried out in Bomporto, Italy, by marque specialist and former Maserati factory mechanic Franco Tralli, with documentation of the work carried out and photographic records on file. The electrical system was completed by his respected partner Gatti William, Elettrauto, and in 2014 the fuel-injection system was supplied and properly tuned by the Dutch specialists Power Props, with documentation also included in the file. It was then entrusted in 2016 to Mistral Classics, Belgian marque specialists, for additional detailed work, with a service log on file. Following its comprehensive restoration, this Sebring has been driven only sparingly, covering a modest distance since its return to the road.
