An attractive example of the highly regarded Elan S4 ‘Black Badge’, finished in vibrant Yellow with black vinyl interior a combination that perfectly complements the model’s delicate proportions and unmistakable 1960s Lotus character. Part of Lotus folklore - the use of the black Lotus badging was said to pay respects to the legendary Team Lotus F1 driver Jim Clark. It is thought that this Elan has worn the badging from new. The ‘Black Badge’ cars, introduced during the later S4 production run, remain especially desirable among enthusiasts. It is not clear when the 'Black Badge' returned to Yellow.
Developed under the direction of Colin Chapman and produced by Lotus Cars, the Elan S4 represents one of the purest expressions of Chapman’s lightweight philosophy. With its backbone chassis, fibreglass body and lively twin-cam engine, the Elan remains one of the finest handling sports cars of its era, a benchmark frequently cited for steering feel and chassis balance.
This car presents well overall and retains its classic Elan character. The black leather interior is attractive and in keeping with the car’s sporting nature, complemented by period instrumentation and simple, purposeful switchgear, sitting on matching Dunlop tyres, and alloy wheels are fitted.
It should be noted that there is blistering evident in the paintwork across the body, as shown in the photographs. This is not uncommon on fibreglass-bodied cars of this age and will require cosmetic attention if a higher concours standard is desired.
Mechanically, the car has clearly benefited from regular use and ongoing maintenance, supported by the extensive documentation on file dating back to 1979.
This example presents an appealing opportunity to acquire one of the most celebrated British sports cars of the 1960s. A lightweight, engaging and increasingly collectible Lotus with strong provenance and usable mechanical condition.
