The Z3 Roadster perfectly captures the spirit of the great open-top sports cars of the 1960s. With its long bonnet, short rear deck and purposeful, squat stance, it is a design that celebrates classic roadster proportions. Deep, sweeping lines flow into pronounced wheel arches, while the engine sits proudly at the front, driving the rear wheels in the most traditional and rewarding fashion. As the motoring press declared at its launch, this was “the most authentic way to drive a BMW”.

From the outset, BMW intended the Z3 to form the basis of something even more focused. That vision came to fruition in 1997 with the arrival of the M variant - a car that elevated the already charismatic Roadster into a true performance thoroughbred. Developed by BMW’s M division and sharing its powertrain with the formidable BMW M3 (E36), the Z3 M Roadster combined muscular styling, uprated M suspension and a wonderfully sonorous straight-six engine to deliver an invigorating and highly engaging driving experience.

The example presented here is finished in striking Imola Red, a colour that perfectly complements its assertive stance and sporting intent. Inside, the cabin features beautifully contrasting two-tone Imola Red and Black Nappa leather - a combination that enhances both its visual drama and period character.

The current owner purchased the BMW over 25 years ago, in November 2000, when it was just 2 years old and has kept it as part of a private collection so it has spent much of its life as SORN as can be seen by the low miles on each MOT. It has just 3 former keepers in total.

A Category D ‘Vehicle damaged but repairable - Insurer decided not to repair’ was recorded in May 2000, and we are advised by the owner the repair was cosmetic only, replacing the front wing and bonnet.

A modern classic with unmistakable presence, the Z3 M Roadster represents an era when performance, balance and driver involvement were paramount - and today stands as one of BMW M’s most charismatic creations.

PLEASE NOTE: This Lot is recorded on HPI as ‘Category D Insurance Loss. Vehicle Damaged But Repairable - Insurer Decided Not To Repair’ on 24/04/2000 and 10/05/2000.
