The R107 and C107 are sports cars which were produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1971 until 1989, being the second longest single series ever produced by the automaker after the G-Class - that gives you an indication of how good they were. They were sold under the SL (R107) and SLC (C107) models in a variety of names indicating the displacement of the engines. The R107/SL was a two-seat convertible with a detachable roof. During its production run, the R107 was the only roadster offered by Mercedes-Benz, as it replaced the W113 SL-Class in 1971 and was replaced by the R129 SL-Class in 1989. The R129 whilst being a good car has never really captured the attention of the market, possibly due to Mercedes being at their best in early days or the fact that the R107 was always the go to in the 1980s to demonstrate that people had wealth, especially in the movies - who can forget that Bobby Ewing in Dallas had one? The predecessor W113 was notably successful in North America, with 19,440 units (40%) of 48,912 total units sold in the US. The R107 and C107 were even more focused on the American market, with specialised engines, bumper designs, headlights, and emissions management designs. The R107 and C107 sold 204,373 units in the US (68%) of 300,175 total units sold (excluding grey market sales into the US), an indication of the popularity.

We are very pleased to be able to bring to market this very pleasing Mercedes 380 SL R107 finished in gold with contrasting brown check cloth trim and a factory hard top painted brown to match. The SL has only had two owners, as confirmed by the V5 and clear HPi. The SL was first registered on 9/2/1983 to its first owner who kept it till 5/11/1993 when it came into the ownership of the second keeper, who has now decided to pass it on to a new custodian to enjoy and look after. It has had very little use in later years but has been kept very well. The vendor has said it may benefit from a service but you would probably do that anyway – a prudent thing to do with any classic that has had little use - to ensure you get the best out of that throbbing V8 engine.

The Benz looks great and has benefitted from correct storage. It has a nice specification with such things as rear seats, driving lamps, factory hard top and a period Pioneer radio cassette. Under the bonnet and the boot area are very clean and tidy, and it is sat on the correct ‘Mexican Hat’-style alloy wheels. There are also five of them, a nice thing that the spare matches.

Unfortunately very few example remain which makes this very desirable and possibly a shrewd investment going forward, or you could just enjoy it for what it’s meant to be. Either way, it can’t be wrong.
