Successor to the race proven (E9) 3.0 CS / CSi high performance sports coupes, the 6-series was introduced in August 1976. More forgiving and more executive than its predecessors, it utilised a modified version of the (E12) 5-series saloon platform equipped with all-round independent suspension (coil and wishbone front, trailing-arm rear) and powerful disc brakes. A natural rival to the 928 and XJS, the four-seater 6-series proved more capacious than the Porsche and sportier than the Jaguar. Immediately recognisable thanks to its distinctive 'shark nose' frontal styling and thin pillared glasshouse it boasts real road presence. An impression backed up by the various versions of BMW's mighty M30, SOHC straight-six engine fitted throughout the range. The 628 CSi's 2788cc unit developed some 184bhp and 177lbft of torque (outputs that were reputedly sufficient to propel it from 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds and on to 127mph). As we know, the 6 series later came in many guises but there is nothing quite like an original example in a great colour to ooze style and class as this one does.
We are pleased to be able to bring to market this very rare BMW 628 CSi Coupe Automatic, reportedly one of just 862 Automatics completed to RHD specification. Back in the day, this was very much the pinnacle of top end and very rare ownership that was pretty much reserved for the rich and famous due to the rarity and the price. The BMW is finished in the very rare and distinctive colour Agate Green Metallic teamed with Black leather upholstery and finished off with chrome bumpers and trim. Along with the standard alloy wheels, this example looks quite a piece.
Predominantly BMW main dealer service history, the service book contains 21 various stamps and comes with its original book pack, service book, and some of the information that BMW provided. A nice touch is that it is the famed white book pack, which is very rare itself. This is complemented with numerous invoices and receipts.
First registered as ‘A140SUV’ on 1st August 1983, it was sold via marque concessionaire First Front Garages of Kennington to Mr Jeremy Carter four days later. Then bought by fellow Londoner, Mrs Shelagh Ansari during September 1986, she and her family had the four-seater re-registered as ‘SIL 5205’ and kept it for the next thirty-three years. Predominantly main dealer maintained throughout its life, the 628 CSi’s last recorded trip to a BMW service centre was on 20th January 2012 at an indicated 115,385 miles. The BMW had a speedo change at 123,570 miles and the new speedo shows a little over 1,400 miles (the old speedo accompanies the sale). Treated to a service, new electric sunroof motor and some minor bodywork repairs before entering the fourth ownership via the Classic & Sportscar Centre of Malton on 18th September 2019 for £12,000, the Coupe has since been looked after by Vector Vehicle Systems of Northwich.
The closer you look, the more you see, but this is a very tidy example. It would appear to be factory standard specification with standard alloys (five of them), factory sunroof, Pioneer radio cassette, and telephone aerial (very 1980s). It even has its windows etched with the registration number confirming it is the original glass, and still retains its spare key. We think it would be pretty hard to find a better example in this rare colour at this estimate, so why not see if you agree?
