The Bentley Continental R Luxury Coupé was manufactured by Bentley Motors from 1991 to 2003. It was the first Bentley to feature a body not shared with a Rolls-Royce model since the 1965 S3 Continental. At the time of launch, the Continental R was reportedly described as 'the fastest, most expensive, and most powerful Bentley automobile' of its day. It was also said to be 'the most expensive production car in the world', at its introduction, with the Sultan of Brunei reportedly so ennamored with the show car he paid £2 million on the spot for it.
First registered on 16th June 1994, ‘L45 XAD’, with those wonderful lines, has been enjoyed by four previous keepers. The first owner retained the car for more than seven years. The most recent long term keeper owned the vehicle from 2009 to 2021, after which it was acquired by the current keeper. You ‘make progress’ via Rolls Royce’s revered 6750cc engine, the epitome of smoothness and reliability. Adding to the impact of those beautiful lines, this example is finished in Aurora, a Light Metallic Green, complemented by a cabin trimmed in Green with Cream leather, which presents very well, with only slight cracking in the driver’s seat leather; otherwise, it remains in excellent condition. Overall, the vehicle presents extremely well.
The usual refinements are all there and include air conditioning, alloy wheels, cruise control, power assisted steering, and Metallic paint. The original service book is present and contains 19 stamped entries, confirming consistent maintenance. The car also benefits from being shod with the correct Avon tyres.
The maintenance history is extensive and well-documented. In 2021, the car received light recommissioning, including stripping the rear springs, tightening the sumps, replacing the fuel pipes, fitting new brake discs, rebuilding the hubs with new bearings, installing new rear brake pads, replacing the PAS rack, stripping down the offside front subframe, refurbishing the wheels, and fitting new rear speakers. The parcel shelf and pods were retrimmed, and a new condenser unit was fitted. This work was carried out by Classic Motor Corporation, a respected Rolls Royce and Bentley specialist in Llandybie. In 2022, ‘L45 XAD’ received new hydraulic pump seals, a new thermostat, full Dynax rustproofing to the underside, and a service. Additional servicing and underbody wax top ups were completed in 2024, with further work in 2025 including replacement of the rear suspension pipes and another Dynax wax application.
The accompanying paperwork includes a sound system demonstration disc, a paper copy of the most recent MOT showing no advisories, and the original Bentley service book containing 19 stamps:
August 1994 at 1,290 miles; September 1995 at 6,750 miles; April 1996 at 9,998 miles; April 1997 at 13,575 miles; April 1998 at 17,332 miles with S.P Broughton (Bentley & RR dealer).
At 20,213 miles with West Country Rolls Royce (Bentley & RR Specialist); October 2001 at 21,797 miles Michael Powles Ltd (Bentley & RR Specialist); August 2003 31,337 miles Harvey Wash Ltd (Bentley & RR Specialist).
In June 2004 at 35,030 miles; July 2006 at 35,927 miles; January 2008 at 36217 miles; February 2009 36,590 miles with The Chelsea Workshop (Bentley & RR Specialist).
And May 2010 at 39,482 miles with Bentley Edinburgh; November 2010 at 41,860 miles with Bentley Glasgow; March 2013 at 45,155 miles with Bentley Edinburgh.
Also, April 2021 48,719 miles; December 2022 49,192 miles; August 2024 at 50,061 miles; May 2025 at 50,629 miles with Classic Motor Corp. (Bentley & RR Specialist).
As handsome a proposition as any Bentley and at an affordable price. There’s been plenty of attention paid to ‘L45 XAD’ over the years, so this is well worth your attention! Look at what you’re missing if you don’t.
