The Austin-Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite stands as one of the most endearing expressions of post-war British motoring. Introduced in 1958, its forward-hinged bonnet and characterful, raised headlamps bestowed upon it a charm entirely its own, whilst its agile handling and modest price opened the door to sporting motoring for an enthusiastic new generation.
Early examples such as this - first registered in October 1958 - are especially prized among marque devotees.
In the custodianship of its current keeper for some 35 years, the documented history has regrettably been misplaced over time. Nevertheless, a considered inspection suggests an example that has been lightly enjoyed and maintained with care as required.
The vendor affirms that it starts readily and has proven consistently dependable on the road. It is further noted that the carburettors have recently benefitted from a refurbishment kit, supporting continued reliability.
The paintwork presents with some age-related imperfections, including areas of lacquer bubbling to the doors and flanks. The GRP front bonnet, whilst serviceable, would benefit from the fitment of more practical quick-release fastenings in place of the current Allen bolts. Encouragingly, the body structure appears sound and solid, with no evident signs of significant corrosion.
Also included are the original door screens and hood.
Altogether, this delightful Sprite represents an eminently usable classic, perfectly suited to immediate enjoyment while also offering rewarding scope for sympathetic enhancement over time and at the leisure of its next custodian.
An enduring and much-loved model, examples affording such versatility and potential at this level are becoming increasingly scarce.
