We are delighted to offer this characterful 1972 Austin A60 Half Ton Van, a charming and increasingly unusual British light commercial with pleasing provenance and extensive recent work.

Finished in Black with a black interior, this example was originally green but was later resprayed black for use in the television series ‘George Gently’, giving the van an added point of interest and period character. Further distinguishing it visually is the fitment of an A50 front end and TR6 wheels, creating a purposeful and individual appearance. Importantly, the original components are retained in the rear, including four original wheels and tyres, along with one spare TR6 wheel, allowing the next owner to return it to a more standard specification if preferred.

This Austin comes with a driver’s handbook and workshop manual. It also comes with bills and invoices of work that has been carried out throughout its life. They are becoming increasingly rare with it believed to be only 1 of 34 left on the road.

The van has benefitted from a considerable amount of recent mechanical work. The chassis and floors have been cleaned, sanded and coated in underseal, while the braking system has been comprehensively renewed including brake shoes, wheel cylinders and master cylinder. The clutch hydraulics have also been refreshed with a new master cylinder and slave cylinder.

Further works include the replacement of all steering joints, a full service with filters, new thermostat and hoses, new belt, plugs, points, condenser, distributor cap and leads, along with the fitment of an electric fuel pump, new exhaust, new windscreen rubber and new door seals. Oils have also been changed in the gearbox, differential, shock absorbers and steering box.

The van now sits on five TR6 wheels fitted with five new tyres and benefits from a twin-carburettor cylinder head and two new H4 headlights. The vendor advises that it drives and stops as it should, and has proven very reliable.

A highly distinctive and usable classic van, blending practical charm, television interest and extensive recent expenditure, with the bonus of retained original parts for those wishing to return it to a more factory correct appearance.
