More of a soporific grand tourer than an out-and-out sportscar, the XJS was designed to seamlessly blur borders rather than blast down back roads. The superlative 5.3 litre engine developed some 295bhp in later fuel injected form and, when allied to automatic transmission, gave authoritative 150mph performance. Introduced at the 1988 Geneva Motor Show, the long-awaited full convertible version featured a reinforced floor pan, frameless doors and sophisticated electric hood (complete with heated glass rear window). Underpinned by the same all-round independent coil-sprung suspension and power-assisted rack and pinion steering as its Fixedhead Coupe siblings, the soft-top came with anti-lock brakes as standard. Priced at £40,000, a waiting list was quick to form. Today, this model is very much establishing itself as a most worthy latter day classic; good examples being eagerly sought by connoisseurs of the marque.

First registered on March 1st 1989, this low-mileage Signal Red example has been in our vendor's ownership since 1995. Garaged since then, and scarcely used for the last twenty years, the time has now come for his XJS to pass onto another owner. Despite the car's limited use, it remains in good condition all round, especially the interior, engine, and boot lining, all of which present well. It has been serviced for the last three years, but the service history before then is not comprehensive due to the car's lack of use. However, our vendor has had new spark plug wires fitted among other minor work.
