This factory Black RS500 is number 341 of the 500 homologation cars and a highly desirable prize to any collector. First registered in the UK on 2nd September 1987, it spent some time in Hong Kong in 2006 and finally returned to UK shores in 2024. It has been subject to an extensive mechanical restoration of parts related to getting the car back to as near as standard specification as practical, completed by a highly respected name in the industry.

It has been the subject of a documented comprehensive mechanical restoration, with invoices on file from RS500 Specialists for in excess of £21,000 (bills on file for £12,838 £8,522) for mechanical work. The aim of the work appears to have been “to strip and return to as near standard as possible”, as stated on the invoice from January 2026.

In current ownership since 8th February 2005, the iconic silhouette appears very original indeed. There are a few age-related marks, we understand the gleaming Black coachwork is mostly original with some stone chips filled in with only a Black touch-up pen, but it is after all almost forty years old. There appears to be no rust or corrosion whatsoever. The original RS500 Lattice alloy wheels have recent Yokohama Advan Neova tyres all round. The Grey upholstery is in excellent order without any holes or wear, and the carpet is also in excellent condition with the original over-mats supplied when new. Having been garaged, and well cared for - it is ready to be enjoyed or taken to the next level, we suspect relatively easily, up to a collector grade! It really does need to be seen to be appreciated.

Why are they significant? Breaking away from the three-box Saloon shape, the much maligned “Project Toni” - Ford Sierra ‘jelly-mould’ was introduced to the market in 1982 to an unenthusiastic welcome from loyal Ford customers brought up on the much-loved Ford Cortina line. Two years later - after Ford had completely lost the initiative of Racing Competition, Stuart Turner contacted Walter Hayes, of GT40 – Le Mans fame and driving force behind Fords’ 154 Victories and 12 World Championships in Formula One, who offered his full support for a Ford return to Motorsport. Old relationships were renewed at Auto Engineering Company Cosworth and the new YBB Cosworth Turbocharged engine was born. In 1987, Aston Martin Tickford signed the contract for 500 3-door Sierra Homologation cars to be built, and Ford went on to dominate the World Touring Car Championship, Spa 24 Hours, European Touring Car Championship, Japanese Touring Car Championship, AMSCAR Series, Nissan Mobil 500 Series, New Zealand Touring Car Championship, Australian Touring Car Championship BTCC, DTM et-al.

Driven some 40 miles to our auction facility, by ourselves, the car drove as it should. All gears engaged with ease, and the engine pulled well throughout the range without unusual noises or smoking. The temperature was between cold and half as it should be, and no warning lights on the dashboard present whilst running. What a lovely addition to a collection, and a magnificent, appreciating ‘blue oval’ gem amongst pearls.

The RS500 was first registered on the plate ‘E500 FOX’, it has worn a series of cherished plates in ownership since.

Please note: We understand the vendor will be supplying the HMRC NOVA number when it has been issued via letter. A V5C will then need to be applied for (for a new UK owner).
