The wonderfully dramatic BMW 8-Series Coupé was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 and positively bristled with innovations, as befitted the flagship model from the makers of "the ultimate driving machine". While the motoring press focussed on the numerous road car 'firsts' such as the first electronic 'fly-by-wire' throttle, the first 'CAN bus' system to cut down the complexity and weight of the electrical system and the first BMW multi-link rear axle, what really impressed most people was just the sheer presence of the thing.

Luxuriously trimmed inside and packed with all the gadgets that its jet-set client base could wish for, the 8-Series turned every journey into an occasion and made the driver feel special every time they slipped behind the wheel. The 850i was powered by a magnificent all-alloy, 5-litre V12 that produced 300bhp/332lb-ft, enough to propel the 1,790 kg 2+2-seater from 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds on its way to a top speed electronically limited to 155mph.

Supplied new to The Royal House of Brunei and first registered ‘BL 278’, this exceptional BMW 850i was completed on 19 February 1991 and specified in timeless Granite Silver (237) over a beautifully preserved Black hide interior (0226). During its initial four-year Royal stewardship, the car covered a mere 4,000 miles and even today its recorded mileage remains under 20,000—an extraordinarily low figure that reflects decades of careful, considered ownership by discerning custodians who have maintained the car to the highest possible standards.

Remarkably, the car remains wholly original throughout with its factory-applied paintwork retaining a deep and consistent finish, whilst the black leather interior presents in outstanding condition, a testament to its sheltered life and meticulous care.

Imported to the UK in 2002, the BMW has since enjoyed only light, fair-weather use. Its specification is both extensive and desirable, featuring Automatic Stability Control, electric memory seats with lumbar support, electrically adjustable steering column, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, electric sunroof and rear blind, headlamp wash system, and its correct turbine-style 16-inch alloy wheels—all of which function as intended and present superbly.

An exceptional example by any measure, this 850i offers a rare combination of Royal provenance, low mileage and outstanding originality. It would make a significant addition to any serious BMW collection or indeed any carefully curated assembly of fine motor cars.

The cherished registration ‘850 EMW’ was assigned by the current owner in 2009 and is to remain with the vehicle, forming part of the sale. The car is accompanied by a comprehensive and well-organised history file, including its original book pack, manuals, sales literature, numerous invoices, MOT certificates and supporting documentation, all evidencing a life of diligent maintenance.
