Rare are the majestic Facel IIs, but even more singular is the history of this particular example, purchased new and anonymously by Volvo to be studied by Jan Wilsgaard, head of the design department, as part of the development of an important grand tourer intended for the American market.

Its build sheet reveals that chassis no. 170, wearing body no. 171, left the factory finished in Tudor Grey with a beige leather interior, fitted with an automatic transmission and power steering, and was destined for Sweden with a delivery date of 11 August 1964.

The story of its journey across Europe, its time in the hands of the Volvo team, and the creation of the Volvo P172 prototype-likely named after chassis 170 and body 171 on which it was based-is admirably recounted in various French and Swedish magazine articles, digital copies of which are included in the file.

Sold by Volvo a few years after the project was abandoned, the car remained in Sweden, and from 1983 to 2011 was owned by a single Swedish owner. Acquired by a Luxembourg-based owner, the car underwent a meticulous full bare-metal restoration to its original specification, using new old stock parts, carried out by the renowned Rétromobile workshop in Luxembourg, with extensive invoices on file.

Returned to Paris, France, in 2018 under current ownership, the car subsequently benefited from the restoration of its Connolly leather upholstery and has been carefully maintained since, with a focus on preserving its authenticity, including a major service performed in Spring 2026.
