The BMW 850 CSi represents the ultimate evolution of BMW's early 1990s grand touring philosophy, pairing understated design with serious BMW M engineering. Introduced in 1992 as the flagship of the 8 Series, it was extensively reworked into what many regard as the M8 that never officially materialized, centered around an M-built S70 5.6-liter V12 producing 380 PS and mated exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox. Beyond its powertrain, the CSi received comprehensive chassis and suspension upgrades, including Active Rear Axle Kinematics for enhanced agility and stability, along with larger brakes, sharper steering, subtle aerodynamic revisions, and a bespoke exhaust.
Ordered new in Berlin, Germany, by Richard Schiel GmbH & Co. KG, this CSi served as “a highlight for their showroom,” and certainly it was! Finished in special order BMW Individual Color “GialloGelb” or Giallo Fly, this CSi is just one of eight examples in this color, according to the BMW 8 Series Registry. The car was well optioned with an Anthracite Partial Buffalo leather interior, fine wood trim, a sunroof, a power rear sunshade, and an auxiliary heater, which pushed its original purchase price to 202.000 DM, or nearly 7.5 times the average German salary at the time!
First registered by the dealership on 25 August 1993, the BMW remained in Berlin until it was sold to Rüdiger Faltz GmbH. On 10 May 1997, Faltz sold it to a collector in Luxembourg with just 15,800 kilometers on the odometer. The car returned to Bavaria once again when a collector from Taufkirchen acquired it on 10 August 2007. A minor accident affecting the front of the car occurred in March 2009 at 38,206 kilometers and was repaired to factory standard by the official branch of BMW in Munich for nearly €15.000 and received a BMW Accident Repair Certificate. The car then passed through another owner before entering the current owner's collection on 19 October 2019. In this ownership, the car was completely refinished in rare and striking Giallo, as originally specified.
Presented today with just over 41,000 kilometers, this vibrant BMW 850 CSi remains as striking as when new in Berlin. Rare in both specification and color, it combines low mileage, strong provenance, and genuine BMW M pedigree, representing a seldom-seen opportunity for the discerning collector.
