The Caterham Super Seven is widely regarded as one of the purest driver's cars ever created, a direct evolution of the legendary Lotus Seven famed for its lightweight construction and razor-sharp dynamics. This exceptional 1996 example elevates that already thrilling formula to an altogether different level, thanks to its remarkable provenance, unusual specification, and extraordinary condition. Supplied new as a kit by Caterham Cars, this Super Seven has had just one owner from new and has only covered a mere 2,000 miles. Its owner enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career with Cosworth, where he served as Sales Manager. Notably, the first engine he was involved in selling was the iconic Cosworth BDA, an engine which left such a lasting impression, that he chose to build his own Caterham around one.

At the heart of this car lies that very engine, a 1700cc Cosworth BDA, widely regarded as one of the finest four-cylinder engines ever produced. Featuring an 83.5mm bore and 77.6mm stroke, twin 45DCOE Weber carburettors, and a dry sump system, this unit produces an exhilarating 175bhp and revs eagerly to 8,000rpm. The result is a driving experience of exceptional intensity, combining razor-sharp throttle response with a spine-tingling induction note. Quite simply, this Caterham offers performance and character far beyond that of a standard example.

The car was expertly assembled by Arrowstar of Oxford, with the engine components sourced directly from Cosworth. Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file, which further enhances its appeal. This includes detailed engine build specifications, Cosworth engineering drawings complete with assembly instructions, numerous invoices, and extensive correspondence. Particularly noteworthy is a period classic car magazine article featuring this very car shortly after its completion, in which the journalist lavished praise upon it, clearly captivated by its performance and character.

Mechanically, the car is equipped with a five-speed gearbox and benefits from the desirable De Dion rear suspension setup, enhancing both ride quality and handling precision. Additional features include adjustable leather seats and side screens, making it as usable as it is exhilarating. The history file also contains original Caterham documentation, including the owner's manual and a wealth of supporting paperwork.
Presented in superb condition throughout, this is unquestionably one of the finest Caterham Super Sevens we have encountered. Its minimal mileage, single ownership, and exceptional specification set it apart, while the presence of the Cosworth BDA engine transforms it into something truly special.

For the enthusiast, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a uniquely specified, beautifully preserved Caterham with outstanding provenance. Combining motorsport pedigree, meticulous ownership, and an engine of legendary status, this remarkable Super Seven promises an unforgettable driving experience. Consigned by Fraser Smith
