The 1990 debut of the Diablo marked a continuation of Lamborghini's commitment to raw performance. Save for some slightly rounded edges under new ownership, the unbridled Diablo was as hardcore as the Countach it replaced. However, the model's continued evolution after Audi's 1998 acquisition saw the Raging Bull mature into a more refined, yet no less staggering supercar.
The final VT 6.0 model introduced in 2000 showcased this evolution through its revised front fascia, modernized “telephone dial” 18-inch O.Z. wheels, and Lamborghini's most powerful V12 engine ever at the time of its release. Its 6.0-liter Bizzarrini V12 now generated 550 CV, surpassing its predecessor by 20 CV, while torque increased to 620 Nm. As before, this monstrous output was channeled through the VT's Viscous Traction four-wheel drive system.
Where Audi's stewardship truly paid dividends was in the cabin, bringing refined seating with adjustable support, an automatic climate control system, and modern conveniences like storage pockets, map lights, and even coat hooks-amenities previously unthinkable in a Lamborghini. This final and most evolved model has secured its place among collectors as both the definitive Diablo variant and one of the most significant modern Lamborghinis, bridging the raw drama of the company's independent era with the refined engineering that would define its future under German ownership.
This 2001 Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 is finished in Grigio Iris over a matching leather interior. Originally destined for the European market, it was purchased new from Lamborghini Porrentruy by French Formula One driver Olivier Panis, who was driving for British American Racing (BAR) at the time, and was first registered to the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix winner that September. Panis reportedly owned the car until 2014, putting approximately 19,000 kilometers on his Diablo. Its included service books indicate standard maintenance from new through respected Lamborghini service centers in France, Switzerland, and Italy; notably receiving a clutch replacement in August 2017 and its preemptive 48,000 km service in May 2021. This example landed in the care of the Germany-based consignor by 2022, entering a superb and highly curated pen of other rare Bulls.
Offered today with 20,790 kilometers at cataloging, this Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 is furnished with its owner's manual plus warranty booklet and maintenance schedule in its branded pouch, plus service invoices under Panis' ownership.
If its provenance as originally owned by noted Formula One race winner Olivier Panis and overall rarity weren't sufficient alone to qualify it as an essential addition to any serious collection of rare Lamborghinis or other exclusive supercars, this example's special-order, color-shifting shade of Grigio Iris provides a definitive final flourish: an arresting and unforgettable expression of the Diablo model at its most refined.
