This 1953 Hudson Hornet is a truly fascinating example of one of America’s most celebrated post-war performance Saloons. Finished in striking Seal Grey over Toro Red with a beautifully appointed Red leather interior, this car perfectly captures the bold styling and engineering innovation that made the Hornet a legend both on the road and the racetrack.
One of the most notable aspects of this particular car is its rarity and provenance. It is believed to be one of approximately 80 factory-built right-hand drive examples produced by Hudson, making it exceptionally scarce. Supplied new from the United States in April 1953, it was exported to Rhodesia, where it began a long and well-documented life. Its early ownership includes a series of private custodians, with original registration books from Southern Rhodesia still present, providing a rare and tangible link to its early years.
The car’s journey continued across continents, arriving in the UK in the mid-1980s, where it was initially stored before being registered in 1994. Since then, it has passed through a number of enthusiastic owners, including periods in Northern Ireland and the South of England, before returning to the mainland UK. The current owner acquired the car in 2021, during which time it has been dry stored and carefully preserved.
Under the bonnet lies Hudson’s renowned 'Twin H-Power' straight-six engine, a 5-litre unit equipped with twin carburettors. This high-performance setup, featuring a high-compression cylinder head and performance camshaft, was instrumental in the Hornet’s domination of early NASCAR racing. The engine is paired to a three-speed manual column change gearbox with overdrive, offering a distinctive and engaging driving experience. Recent mechanical attention has included professional work to improve the smoothness of the gearbox linkage and refine throttle response, enhancing usability while retaining originality.
The history file accompanying the car is extensive, comprising a large collection of documents including international registration records, MOT certificates, invoices, and correspondence, all of which help to build a comprehensive picture of this car’s unique life story.
