1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

The R107 SL class is one of the most quintessential luxury convertibles of the 1970-1980’s time period. Mercedes launched the R107 SL in 1971 and it was produced all the way up until 1990, if you wanted to show your neighbors and friends that you had “made it” in business and life then there was usually an SL in your garage. The beautiful lines of the SL look just as good today as it did when new and these just ooze with style and grace.

The 560 is the one to have with its big 5.6L SOHC V8 which featured dual timing chains and Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection, producing 227hp and lb/ft of torque. All 560SLs were equipped with the latest in luxury features like a 4-speed automatic transmission, anti-lock brakes, limited slip differential, driver air bag, cruise control, power windows-locks, automatic climate control, front and rear fog lamps, removable hard top-retractable soft top, and full instrumentation. The R107 was made when Mercedes-Benz overengineered their cars to last practically forever with proper maintenance and care.

This 1986 model year 560SL was built in November of 1985 and sold new on January 23, 1986 by European Motors Ltd in San Francisco, CA. The car is finished in the classic attractive color combo of Signal red over Crème Beige interior. The car would remain in sunny CA until it was sold and moved to WA state in 2007. Today the car has just under 75,000 miles and still looks very good for its age. The wheels were updated at some point to later 15-inch SL type and finished in chrome with tires that wear 2021 date codes and have like-new tread depth.

Much work has been done to the car since the current owner acquired it in 2021 including: new shocks, new tires, new rear brakes, fuel system overhaul, new battery, oil-transmission-diff service, air filter, and hood insulation. The original soft top is torn and needs replacing. The interior is in good condition overall aside from the leather on both front seat bottom are cracked from age and need to be replaced. The body is in good condition with no signs of rust, according to paint meter readings the car was refinished in its original color at some point to a high quality and the paint shines nicely with only a few chips and light defects consistent with the age. The hard top is in very good condition.

There is a later Panasonic CD stereo fitted to the dash. The car also comes with a hard top stand, new uninstalled front brake rotors-pads-hoses, original owner’s manuals, hard top wrench, spare tire, jack, tools, lambs wool seat covers, first aid kit, floor mats, and some misc spare parts. The car has a clean CarFax report and clear WA title in the current owner’s name.

With a little love this SL has many more miles and years ahead to enjoy, it surly will make you look like a movie star rolling down the road with the top down, wind in your hair, and a big smile on your face when you realize that you have a great sense of style for classic automobiles and have “made it” after-all.
