The BMW 2002 tii, introduced in 1971, was an evolution of the already successful 2002 model from BMW’s ‘Neue Klasse’ (New Class) lineup, which had redefined the company’s identity in the 1960s by focusing on sporty, driver-oriented saloons. The ‘tii’ designation stood for Touring International Injection, highlighting its key upgrade; a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel-injection system that replaced the twin carburettors of the 2002 ti. This innovation boosted performance to around 130 horsepower, giving the lightweight car lively acceleration and helping cement BMW’s reputation for producing agile, performance-focused road cars. The 2002 tii also featured improved suspension tuning and braking components, making it popular among driving enthusiasts and in motorsport circles. Produced until 1975, when stricter emissions regulations (particularly in the United States) and the arrival of the larger BMW 3 Series successor signalled the end of the 02 range, the 2002 tii remains one of the most iconic and collectible classic BMWs, often credited with laying the foundation for the brand’s future sports saloon philosophy.
We are delighted to offer this 1973 BMW 2002 tii in Verona Red with black interior. It’s hard to believe now but 50 years ago BMW was a very niche player in the UK market, probably only selling a few thousand cars a year. That makes this right hand drive example, registered in December 1973, a very rare thing and it would have made quite the impression on Seventies British roads. Unfortunately, there is no history with the BMW but just a cursory glance tells you that this has been a cherished example. The vendor uses it regularly and it was driven over 20 miles to our saleroom. The vendor advises us that he bought it in 2021 from a lady called Belinda. She inherited it from her father, who had purchased it new from Manchester BMW. Apparently, the three previous keepers on the V5C were Belinda, her father and his engineering business, so to all intents and purposes single family ownership for the first 48 years. Although we don’t have the paperwork to support, our vendor tells us that the little BMW has recently benefitted from new springs and shocks, a new water pump, new master cylinder, slave cylinders, shoes and pads, replaced engine oil seals and a fresh carpet set.
The 2002 has always been a handsome little thing but this one looks particularly good with its vibrant red paint and BBS replica wheels. It’s been slightly lowered - just enough to give it a purposeful stance but not slammed and still very drivable. Those wheels are in beautiful condition and wrapped in good quality Yokohama rubber. However, if your preference is for originality, the vendor is also including a set of standard steel wheels with nicely presented hubcaps. We have noted a crack in the windscreen but it is well out of the line of sight. Inside, the 2002 is very original and a lovely place to spend time. The plastics are good and, whilst there’s a little wear to the velour on the front seats, the fabrics and particularly the new carpets make for a very smart cabin. The original radio remains in place and, although an attractive Moto-Lita leather wheel has been fitted, the standard wheel is also available. We have noted that the driver's seatbelt needs some attention as it isn't locking.
The BMW comes with V5C, full book pack, 2002 restoration guide and spare key.
Arguably, the 2002 was the start of BMW as the “ultimate driving machine” - the first of the sporty saloons that have come to define the brand. Supremely useable, this example would be just as at home at a show or meet (where those shiny rims would appeal to young and old alike) as it would be as a quirky and characterful commuter. With the added benefit of being rare RHD example, it ticks all the boxes and is one not to miss.
