Estimated Price: £50,000 - £60,000
Acquired in Holland by renowned historic racing specialist, Gary Spencer of Classic Racing Cars, on behalf of the current owner, Simon Hope, this exceptional 1964-registered Ford Mustang 289 Notchback was sourced specifically to be developed into a Tour Auto-eligible competition car. The resulting build has created a highly capable, road-legal race and rally Mustang, equally at home on endurance rallies or the circuit.
Gary Spencer's reputation within international historic motorsport has been forged over decades at the highest level with clients such as Chris Chiles Senior and Junior and of course he was chosen by Davide Hart to start his race programme. His preparation and development work has contributed to victories in some of Europe's most prestigious events, including the Tour Auto and the Spa 6 Hours and his uncompromising standards are evident throughout this Mustang.
The foundation for the project was an outstanding bodyshell which, upon stripping, proved remarkably original and exceptionally well preserved and is regarded by those involved in its preparation as one of the finest Mustang shells currently competing in historic motorsport. Power comes from a 289ci V8 expertly built by respected engine specialist Tim Adams, with recent testing at Oulton Park demonstrating both reliability and competitive performance.
The Mustang made its competition debut in the inaugural Tour Britannia and has subsequently entered and successfully completed every event for which it has been entered, including numerous circuit races. Highlights include an outright victory at Silverstone in the hands of Iconic Auctioneers Chairman, Nick Whale in a two-driver race with the owner.
Accompanying the car are two comprehensive lever-arch files containing an extensive history of its competition career. Included are event programmes from the Silverstone Classic (2007, 2008 and 2010), Oulton Park Gold Cup, Tour Britannia and the Jersey Festival of Motoring, together with a substantial collection of invoices, correspondence and supporting documentation. Recent expenditure alone amounts to approximately £25,000. Particularly significant are the FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP) papers, valid until 2034, ensuring eligibility for a wide range of prestigious international historic motorsport events.
Further enhancing the appeal of this Mustang is the inclusion of a small selection of spares and a colour matched cover to support future competition use. Also accompanying the vehicle is its current V5C, allowing it to be enjoyed both on the public highway and in competition, offering the flexibility to participate in road-based historic rallies as well as circuit events.
Presenting superbly and boasting proven competition credentials, this striking early Mustang represents a rare opportunity to acquire a genuinely front-running historic competition car. Equally suited to road-based endurance rallies or circuit competition, it offers its next custodian entry into some of the most desirable events on the historic motorsport calendar.
