The immediate post-war years saw British manufacturers embracing American-inspired styling and improved refinement, with Vauxhall leading the way through cars such as the Velox. Introduced as the company’s flagship saloon, the Velox offered six-cylinder smoothness, generous accommodation and modern styling at a time when many British family cars still felt decidedly pre-war in character.

Today, early Velox models are increasingly rare sights on UK roads, particularly examples restored to a genuinely high standard and retaining the charm and character that made these cars so appealing when new.

Offered here is a beautifully presented 1950 Vauxhall Velox, a car benefitting from an extensive restoration programme with expenditure understood to total approximately £43,000, supported by an impressive accompanying history file containing invoices, restoration records and photographic documentation.

Finished in an attractive cream colour scheme with extensive chrome detailing, this Velox presents extremely well throughout. The elegant pontoon-style bodywork, broad front grille and flowing post-war lines give the car tremendous period presence, while the overall quality of the restoration is immediately apparent. Panel fit and shut lines appear notably good, with the brightwork, trim and exterior fittings all displaying in highly presentable order.

The photographic history included within the file documents the restoration process in considerable detail, covering dismantling, bodywork, paint preparation and reassembly, offering reassuring evidence of the level of work undertaken.

Power comes from the Velox’s characteristic 2275cc inline six-cylinder engine, paired with a three-speed manual gearbox. In period, these engines were praised for their smooth and refined nature, offering relaxed cruising manners and strong low-speed torque compared to many contemporary British saloons. The Velox was regarded as a comfortable long-distance touring car in its day, aided by independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes.

The interior retains a wonderfully authentic feel while clearly benefitting from the restoration work carried out. The spacious cabin features broad bench seating, column gear change and plentiful glass area, creating the light and airy atmosphere typical of quality post-war saloons. The seats retain their original red leather upholstery, while the original red velour door cards have also been preserved in order to maintain the car’s period character and originality. The carpets and headlining have been sympathetically renewed using age-appropriate materials.

The current owner has enjoyed the car for the past five years, during which further expenditure of approximately £4,000 was reportedly undertaken in 2022, adding to the already substantial restoration investment.

Accompanying the vehicle is a particularly comprehensive history file comprising:

  • Extensive restoration invoices
  • Photographic restoration records
  • Additional invoices from current ownership
  • Supporting historical paperwork
  • Documentation detailing restoration expenditure

Rarely do early Velox saloons come to market in such comprehensively restored and highly presentable condition. Combining handsome post-war styling, smooth six-cylinder performance and substantial documented restoration work, this example represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of Vauxhall’s most charming early post-war models.

A beautifully restored and exceptionally well-presented example of Vauxhall’s elegant early post-war flagship saloon, offering refined six-cylinder motoring and outstanding period charm.
