  • Facelift example
  • Satisfying project

BMW’s very first 7 series, known internally as the E23, was first launched in 1977. All E23s were fitted with 6-cylinder engines and the 735i took over at the top of the range from the 733i in 1979. It had 215 bhp and a 0-60 mph time of 7.9 seconds for the manual. Contemporary road tests praised the big BMW for its superb handling and strong performance and braking, although the ride was a bit firmer than the class leaders. The 735i was facelifted in 1983 and remained the flagship of the range until it was replaced by the E32 in 1986.

We are pleased to offer this 1983 BMW 735i in Henna red with grey velour interior, which was first registered in January 1983 on the plate ‘842 TTV’. This is the facelift model, and, unlike the vast majority of 7 series, it came supplied with a manual gearbox - a very rare thing in its day and unheard of today. It is in true ‘barn find’ condition so is quite clearly a non-runner, and we have made no attempt to start it. Indeed, we are not entirely sure of the last time it was on the road, but the last MOT expired in January 2020, so this may give you an indication of when it was last driven. There is no accompanying history, but we do have a V5C and HPI which confirms only 4 former keepers and that it last changed hands in 2023. Clearly, the years have not been kind to the bodywork and there is no doubt this is a complete restoration project. We always recommend a first-hand inspection to satisfy yourself on the condition. The interior has fared rather better and there are many parts which would appear to only require a good clean.

The E23 7 series is rare in any specification, and in manual form especially so. It’s a throwback to a time when BMWs combined handsome, classy styling with performance and handling a level above the usual prestige rivals. Whether it is by way of a full restoration or simply as a parts car, this once proud saloon still has something to give. Interestingly, these are now becoming very sought after and are beginning to command some very high prices when restored, just a thought. We suspect there may be no other out there in red, as it would have been a brave choice in 1983, which makes this very rare as most of them are in various metallic shades of silver and grey. Dare to be different like the first owner was back in 1983, we applaud his choice.
