The engine was bored out by 1 mm, increasing the displacement to 4.943 cc (4,9 L) — hence the name change to 412, which stands for the displacement of a single cylinder in cubic centimeters. Both the manual and automatic transmissions were retained, but the exterior badges no longer indicated the type of transmission fitted. Bosch ABS was offered, a first for Ferrari. The bodywork was modified, featuring a raised rear deck that offered more luggage space. Pininfarina made many subtle adjustments to modernize the exterior.
