We are pleased to present this 1988 Ford Escort XR3i, a particularly well-kept and highly evocative example of one of Ford’s most recognisable performance hatchbacks of the late 1980s. Combining period charm with an engaging driving experience, the XR3i remains a staple of the modern classic scene, and this example represents an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
This example is accompanied by a comprehensive and reassuring history file, comprising a collection of MOT certificates along with service records from both Ford main dealers and respected independent specialists. Of particular note is an original bill of sale dated 1996, retained alongside the factory radio code - an increasingly rare and desirable detail that adds to the provenance. Following a prolonged period of storage, it has also benefitted from recent mechanical servicing to ensure it is ready for continued enjoyment.
The odometer currently displays 12,300 miles, however, it is understood that the unit has exceeded its mechanical limit and returned to zero, indicating a more accurate total in the region of 112,300 miles. Importantly, the Escort was stored indoors from 2003 through to 2023, a factor that has undoubtedly contributed to its overall preservation. Upon removal from storage, it was sympathetically recommissioned, with careful attention paid to maintaining its originality and character.
Externally, the Escort presents extremely well, having benefitted from a full repaint at some stage in its life. More recently, the paintwork has been professionally ceramic coated, enhancing both protection and finish, and giving the colour a notably deep and lustrous appearance that stands out in all lighting conditions.
The interior remains in commendably original condition, displaying only light signs of age consistent with its history. Particularly charming details include the retention of original Quicks of Chester dealer stickers and matching registration plates, further reinforcing the authenticity. Adding to its appeal is a black, book-style journal documenting maintenance and works carried out over the years, offering a fascinating and detailed insight into its life and careful ownership.
It is worth noting that the Escort was driven some 15 miles to our premises, and the engine, clutch and gearbox were reported to have performed as expected with no obvious issues at all. The dashboard gauges, dials and buttons all appeared to work without fault.
Altogether, this XR3i represents a well-documented, attractively presented and increasingly desirable modern classic, ready to be enjoyed on the road or appreciated as part of a collection.
