The R230 generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class was introduced at the 2001 IAA Frankfurt and the 2001 IAA Bologna, replacing the R129. The R230 underwent revisions in 2006 and 2008 and was succeeded by the new R231 SL-Class in 2011. Development: The development of the virtual design took place in a room full of advanced computer technology, the so-called "CAVE" (Computer Aided Virtual Environment). This technology had previously been used for the design of the W203 in 1995. The supercomputer in the "CAVE" was able to create full-size images of selected designs using five projectors, allowing designers to inspect every detail of every displayed surface. Parallel to the virtual process, the twelve scale models were also meticulously examined, with four striking models selected to be recreated at full scale. This development of the scale models took place parallel to the development of the interior design.
