The Volvo 850 represented one of the most important turning points in Volvo's history. Introduced at the beginning of the 1990s, its front-wheel-drive layout and transversely mounted five-cylinder engine represented a dramatic technical departure from the traditional rear-wheel-drive Volvos that preceded it.

Today, early 850s are becoming increasingly difficult to find in this sort of condition, making this handsome 1993 850 SE a particularly appealing survivor.

Finished in dark metallic blue with contrasting grey lower trim, this car presents extremely well for a car now more than three decades old. The bodywork retains a deep shine and the car remains pleasingly original in appearance, right down to its Volvo wheel trims and period Rudds Volvo dealer-branded rear number plate.

There are some minor age-related imperfections visible on close inspection, including light bumper scuffs and marks together with some wear to the wheel trims, but these are entirely consistent with an original car of this age and do little to detract from its overall presentation.

Inside, the condition is particularly impressive. The original-style grey patterned cloth upholstery, dashboard, carpets and door trim have survived remarkably well, giving the cabin exactly the sort of unspoilt appearance increasingly sought after in modern classics.

Power comes from Volvo's characterful 2.0-litre 20-valve five-cylinder petrol engine, coupled here to the desirable five-speed manual gearbox.

Importantly, the accompanying history file provides considerable insight into the car's maintenance over the years. Among the paperwork are invoices from Tremona Garage and South Hants Garage Services recording routine servicing, MOT preparation and mechanical repairs.

Of particular note is an invoice dated December 2014, at approximately 70,192 miles, recording the installation of a second-hand replacement engine. At the same time the car received a new cambelt kit, spark plugs, antifreeze, engine oil and filter, together with a replacement radiator, at a recorded cost of £1,578.

Further invoices document continued maintenance thereafter, including a replacement starter motor in 2016, while earlier paperwork records servicing and other repairs. The file also contains Volvo 850 literature/manual material.

With approximately 74,000 miles indicated and an MOT valid until March 2027, the car appears to have covered relatively modest mileage in recent years.

The 850 was once an everyday sight on British roads, but attrition has transformed good early examples into genuinely interesting modern classics. Cars retaining their original appearance, manual transmission and a worthwhile history file are becoming particularly difficult to find.

This is a wonderfully nostalgic example that appears to have been properly loved rather than simply preserved, with its extensive paperwork helping to tell the story of its life.
