When Honda introduced the CB750 at the end of the 1960s, the brand seriously shook up the motorcycle world. A large, smooth-running four-cylinder engine, dependable Japanese engineering, an electric starter, and performance figures that were genuinely impressive at the time: suddenly Honda showed that a big motorcycle could be not only fast, but also refined and reliable. It is therefore no coincidence that the CB750 is often regarded as one of the very first true superbikes.

The formula also proved remarkably future-proof. In the decades that followed, the transverse four-cylinder layout became almost the standard configuration for sporty Japanese motorcycles. What felt revolutionary in 1969 would later become completely familiar to entire generations of riders.

And that brings us to this 1977 example. This Honda CB750 was recently fully restored by a pair of Swedish gentlemen with technical backgrounds and extensive knowledge. The result is exceptionally convincing.

Only NOS parts, or new old stock, were used during the restoration. In other words, original period components that had never previously been used. That makes a significant difference in a restoration like this. The objective was clearly not simply to make the motorcycle look beautiful again, but to return it as faithfully as possible to the way Honda originally intended it.

The finish is exceptionally attractive, the details are correct, and the entire motorcycle makes an extraordinarily fresh impression. The Flake Sunrise Orange color scheme adds another generous dose of character. Subtle? Not exactly. Typically 1970s? Absolutely. And that is precisely why it suits this Honda so well.

The air-cooled four-cylinder engine is, of course, the heart of the machine. Four exhaust pipes emerging from beneath the engine, that characteristic mechanical soundtrack, and an engine that picks up beautifully smoothly: a CB750 has a character all its own.

We are, incidentally, beginning to suspect that our employer has a bit of a guilty pleasure for the Honda CB750. And frankly, we are starting to understand why. Because the longer you look at one of these early Hondas, the clearer it becomes just how important it really was.
