The Porsche 911 Turbo has long occupied a special position within the 911 range, and the 996-generation cars are now firmly establishing themselves as highly desirable modern classics. Combining the legendary twin-turbocharged Mezger flat-six with four-wheel drive, dramatic wide-body styling and genuine everyday usability, the 996 Turbo remains an exceptionally capable performance car more than two decades after its introduction.

This 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet is a particularly appealing example, combining the open-air Turbo body with the all-important six-speed manual gearbox.

Finished in Arctic Silver with a contrasting blue electrically operated hood and black leather interior, the car presents extremely well throughout and has clearly benefited from careful ownership and maintenance.

Perhaps most importantly, this is not a car presented on appearance alone. The large accompanying history file is a particularly reassuring feature of this example, containing invoices documenting significant expenditure and maintenance over the years. Of particular note is an invoice at 72,773 miles recording the replacement and adjustment of both Forge turbo actuators, together with a comprehensive service including six spark plugs, six ignition coil packs, filters and an auxiliary drive belt. The same visit also saw attention to the cooling system and replacement of a convertible roof seal.

This level of documented maintenance is particularly welcome on a 996 Turbo and, combined with the way the car presents and drives today, gives the impression of an example that has been properly used and maintained rather than simply polished and stored.

The odometer currently displays 80,600 miles, a very usable figure for a 22-year-old 911 Turbo and one which, when considered alongside the accompanying history, makes this an especially attractive proposition for somebody wanting a car to actually drive and enjoy.

The engine delivers the immense performance expected of a 996 Turbo, while the manual gearbox gives the car the involvement that makes these cars so appealing to enthusiasts.

Cosmetically, the car is equally as pleasing. The silver metallic paintwork presents very well and suits the distinctive Turbo bodywork particularly nicely. The widened rear quarters, side air intakes, deeper bumpers and characteristic rear spoiler give the car a noticeably more muscular appearance than the contemporary Carrera.

The factory alloy wheels also present well and complement the car's understated colour combination.

Naturally, this is a car which has been driven and enjoyed, and some small age-related imperfections are present on close inspection. These are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle and, in our opinion, do little to detract from what is a very attractive overall example.

Inside, the predominantly black leather cabin with blue upholstery has also survived well. The seats display the expected light creasing and wear associated with use, but remain presentable, while the dashboard, centre console and surrounding trim retain the familiar quality and purposeful layout of the 996-generation 911.

With manual 996 Turbos becoming increasingly sought after, this represents a very appealing opportunity to acquire one of Porsche's great modern performance cars in a specification that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
