The Bentley Azure was launched in 1995 and quickly became a distinguished and desirable addition to the Bentley family. The Azure was based on the hugely successful platform of the Continental R Coupe which had itself been launched just a few years before hand. The Azure, as with its fixed roof sibling, graced us once more with both presence and sophistication whilst allowing comfortable seating of four adult passengers in convertible format. Power came from the company's stalwart 6.75 litre, V8 featuring a single intercooled turbocharger producing in the region of 380bhp and capable of 0-60mph in an impressive 6.1 seconds. Owing to the limited space at Bentley's Crewe factory, the Azure was designed and manufactured by Pininfarina, and whilst this significantly added to the vehicle's production cost, the resultant production vehicle was nothing short of stunning. From 1999, the Azure was also available in 'Mulliner Trim' allowing the buyer the option for further factory customisation during the build process. Pricing varied as equipment could be significantly different from one car to the next depending on personal preference.

This right hand drive example was manufactured in 1997 and is attractively finished in Black Velvet, a rich deep-claret shade which suits the Azure's sweeping lines particularly well. The exterior is complemented by a beige leather interior, creating a suitably elegant and traditional colour combination.

The odometer currently indicates approximately 45,334 miles. The vendor reports that considerable expenditure has been lavished upon the car during its life, helping to preserve its impressive presentation and usability. Its substantial electrically operated hood was replaced a few years ago, an important consideration on an Azure given the complexity and cost associated with the original roof assembly.

The car has also been fitted with a modern retractable infotainment unit incorporating satellite navigation and a reversing camera. Although discreet when folded away, this useful upgrade makes the sizeable Bentley considerably easier to manoeuvre and more convenient for contemporary touring. The tyres are reported to have covered only approximately 700 miles. A new MoT test certificate has been obtained for confidence and our vendor states that the odometer has an intermittent fault that has only recently occurred which may need addressing.

The Azure occupies a particularly appealing position within Bentley history. It retains the traditional 6.75 litre turbocharged V8, hand-finished Crewe interior and commanding character associated with the marque's earlier motor cars, while offering the performance, comfort and convenience expected from a more modern grand tourer.

Presented in an especially handsome colour combination and displaying a modest mileage for its age, this 1997 Bentley Azure represents an opportunity to acquire one of the most exclusive four-seat convertibles of the 1990s. Its replacement hood, history of significant expenditure and sympathetic modern upgrades should make it equally suited to relaxed summer use, continental touring or inclusion within a collection of important British luxury motor cars.
