Built on 13th December 1957 and despatched just weeks later to Green & Whincup Ltd of Newbury, Berkshire, this Land Rover Series I began its working life exactly as its makers intended. Registered on 21st January 1958, it remains a wonderful example of one of Britain’s most iconic utility vehicles.

Richard has been the proud owner for the past four years, adding this remarkable Series I to his own Land Rover collection. What drew him to the vehicle was its authenticity. It had been sympathetically rebuilt by the previous owner with a clear focus on preserving its original character rather than changing it.

The restoration was comprehensive. The engine and gearbox were fully rebuilt, a new wiring loom installed, along with a new Exmoor Trim canvas tilt and five new tyres. The chassis, bulkhead and running gear were all rebuilt and galvanised, creating a solid foundation for the years ahead.

Interestingly, once the restoration had been completed, the vehicle was never properly driven. Richard took on the important task of completing the shake-down process, carefully addressing the small details that only reveal themselves once a classic returns to the road.

Today, the Land Rover remains remarkably faithful to its original specification. The only discreet concession to modern reliability is the addition of electronic ignition. It was serviced in May 2026, benefits from extensive photographic documentation of the rebuild and stands as an honest, authentic Series I that has been preserved rather than reinvented.

When asked what makes it so special, Richard’s answer was simple.

“It still looks and feels exactly as a 1957 Land Rover should.”

Some vehicles become part of a collection.

Others become part of your life.

Richard bought this Series I because it represented something increasingly difficult to find. An honest Land Rover that had survived without losing its identity. Free from unnecessary modifications and untouched by the chequer plate additions that so often hide the character of these old working machines.

Over the past four years it has been a regular companion on club runs and rallies, doing exactly what a Series I was built to do. The roads may have changed since 1957, but the experience behind the wheel has not.

The gentle burble of the two-litre engine, the upright driving position and the wonderfully simple mechanical honesty remind you that driving was once about the journey itself, not simply reaching the destination.

It is not about speed.

It is not about luxury.

It is about waving to strangers in passing Land Rovers, arriving a little later with a smile on your face, and enjoying every mile along the way.

Now this Series I is ready for its next chapter.

Richard hopes it finds someone who values authenticity over perfection, character over convenience, and understands that vehicles like this were never built simply to be owned.

They were built to become part of someone’s story.
