For a lot of enthusiasts, our childhood memories influence our dream cars. Watching TV shows and films in the 70s and 80s served up the coolest selections. While the UK was delivering Escorts, Marinas and Allegros, US films such as Bullitt and later TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, exposed us to another Charger (and small Denim Shorts) that remain in many memories to this day.
This Charger started its life in 1968 in Alabama with the original 383cu engine but was replaced while still in the US with the 440cu from the R/T version.
Brought over to the UK in 2007 by Tony Oksein in its original Blue and in need of some extensive work, it was bought soon after by a gentleman who owned it until his untimely passing in July this year.
‘FMA139F’ has been extensively restored by a professional bodywork engineer removing all rust with new panels, including the boot floor and both sills. The underside was shot-blasted and sealed. All body panels were taken down to bare metal, sealed and undercoated before being sprayed in a new Black Metallic finish.
New front disc brakes and new drum rears have been installed. Add in new 8” front and 10” rear wheels with new rear leaf springs, and the front torsion bars upgraded to the 440 R/T specifications. All new lights and bezels have been fitted with a new roof lining, carpets and leather seats. You can start to see the picture of the extent to which this Charger has been restored.
Now on to the heart, the engine was extensively overhauled in 2013 by Billadeau Speed with the following work carried out:
New balanced crank and bearings
New stainless-steel valves
New timing chain tensioner and cogs
New ESP H Beam connecting rods
New piston and piston rings
New oil pump and sump
New 440 ignition kit
New engine mounts
New fuel pump
New Holley 750 double pump carburettor
New stainless-steel headers and 4” stainless steel exhaust system
The heads were skimmed and block bored with torque plates, and to top all of that, the engine has been dyno tuned to 484.5 BHP. We agree with the owner that this Charger deserves to wear the R/T badges.
