Famously described by Zora Arkus-Duntov as ''a Corvette I can be proud to drive in Europe,'' this C2-generation (1963–1967) Sting Ray is the defining Corvette of its era, with a particular significance in Switzerland, the native country of company founder Louis-Joseph Chevrolet.
According to its trim tag, this 1967 Sting Ray's body was produced on 26 April 1967 by the A.O. Smith Corporation of Ionia, Michigan. Rarely seen, both the Corvette's original window sticker and its Corvette Order Copy, better known as the “tank sticker,” reveal the final specification as delivered to Courtesy Chevrolet of Los Angeles, California, that summer. Painted in Sunfire Yellow and selected with a rare White-and-Black upholstered interior, this Sting Ray Coupe features a long list of options accounting for a quarter of the Corvette Coupe's base price that includes power windows, brakes, and steering, air conditioning, headrests, tinted glass, an AM/FM radio, air injection for California emissions, and whitewall tires.
According to research conducted by the consignor, the Corvette was owned by a U.S. Army soldier by 1984. Following an extended deployment in Hawaii, the Sting Ray saw little use and was sold to an Army colleague in Colorado before it landed with Swiss-born Marco Hartner, owner of Corvette restorers Midyear Factory of Punta Gorda, Florida. While Hartner intended to restore the interesting matching-numbers coupe for himself, it was acquired by the Swiss-based consignor, a long-time Corvette aficionado himself, and treated to an 18-month photo-documented, complete restoration at the hands of Hartner and his talented team.
What was completed and then quickly delivered to the consignor in Switzerland in time for their 70th birthday celebrations was nothing short of spectacular and has since been described as ''The best 1967 Corvette Sting Ray in Europe.'' Following its arrival in Switzerland, the restoration captured the Swiss Heartbeat Gold Award in 2017 and First in Class at the ZCCA on Bürkliplatz in Zürich in 2021. Such is the level of restoration and subsequent upkeep that, upon inspection by a Broad Arrow specialist, the options-laden Sting Ray appears not to have aged at all, having seen limited use since.
Consigned to Broad Arrow's second annual Zürich Auction, this Sunfire Yellow Sting Ray Coupe offers an intriguing proposition. For the enthusiast of the model, the combination of its unusual factory specification, original production records, and matching-numbers drivetrain makes for a particularly appealing example.
While firmly established as America's Sports Car and famously associated with the astronauts of the Space Race, this example is decidedly Swiss. Built by a company founded by Swiss-born Louis-Joseph Chevrolet, restored by Swiss-born Marco Hartner, and ultimately brought to Switzerland by a Swiss-based consignor, it has found a fitting home at the Dolder Grand.
