Porsche introduced the 912 in 1965 as a more accessible alternative to the new 911. The car received the air-cooled four-cylinder from the final generation of the 356, wrapped in the modern body of the 911. The result was a sports car that was not only less expensive, but also genuinely enjoyable to drive. The lower mass at the rear gave the 912 a more neutral character, something that is especially appreciated today.
This 1968 example was fully restored and rebuilt several years ago by old-school Porsche specialist Bob Hahn. He is the kind of specialist who relies on experience and the proper tools during a restoration rather than a computer to figure out how something is supposed to go together.
This Porsche was finished in the beautiful shade of Turkish Green. A color that suits the early F-body perfectly. Not too bright, but just vivid enough to bring out the lines of the 912 even more strongly. The body presents very neatly, with good panel fit, careful finishing, and an overall appearance that clearly shows this 912 was rebuilt with attention.
The restoration went far beyond the cosmetic side. The engine, gearbox, braking system, and suspension were all fully addressed as well. The engine itself has been built to an especially high standard and is a fine example of pure craftsmanship. It features, among other things, big-bore cylinders and pistons, a modified camshaft, cylinder heads, an external oil cooler, and a full-flow oil filter. The result is expected to be around 130 horsepower.
That may not sound extreme, until you remember just how light and well balanced a 912 is. And that is exactly why this is one of those cars that, on the right road, can become rather irritating for owners of early 911s. Not because of status, but because of rhythm, weight, turn-in, and traction. This is exactly the kind of 912 you would rather have ahead of you than behind you in a classic rally.
Inside, you get the full cockpit experience with five gauges, exactly as you would want in an early Porsche. The car has also been carefully prepared with a roll bar, bucket seats, and a sport steering wheel. Everything about it suggests that this 912 was built to be properly driven.
Thanks to its lower weight and lighter rear end, the car feels sharp, light, and surprisingly neutral. The steering is direct, the engine responds eagerly, and the whole package invites you to take corners with a certain degree of confidence. For classic rallies, fast country roads, or simply a Sunday morning when you decide the detour is better than the direct route, this is an especially appealing combination.
The condition is exactly what you hope to see in a Porsche of this level. Extremely neat, carefully maintained, and highly attractive in every detail. The paintwork, interior, mechanicals, and overall presentation come together to make a very strong impression.
