An extraordinary survivor from the earliest days of Volkswagen Golf production, this 1975 Golf L represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a remarkably preserved example of one of the most influential small cars ever built. Having spent an astonishing 34 years tucked away beneath covers in a private garage, this delightful Mk1 has emerged displaying just 30,421 miles, with a level of originality and period charm that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
This 1975 Golf L is a particularly appealing early example, finished in an attractive light blue with a contrasting black and beige interior. Its understated specification, slender chrome-trimmed bumpers, simple steel wheels and beautifully proportioned five-door body capture the character of the original Golf perfectly.
What makes this particular car so special, however, is its remarkable ownership and storage history. Having had just two owners from new, the Golf has remained with its current keeper for an incredible 45 years. For the last 34 years, it has been carefully stored beneath covers in a garage, protected from the elements and the rigours of everyday use.
The mileage is particularly interesting. The odometer currently displays just 30,421 miles, while an accompanying MOT certificate from 1986 records 29,870 miles. This represents an increase of only 551 miles between that recorded reading and the present display. Further MOT certificates dating from the 1970s and 1980s accompany the vehicle, providing a fascinating glimpse into its early life and supporting the story of its remarkably limited use.
This is a wonderfully preserved car, with its light blue paintwork retaining an attractive shine and its bodywork presenting exceptionally well for a vehicle now over half a century old. The simple lines of the original Golf remain particularly appealing, while the period steel wheels, chrome detailing and black bumpers complete its authentic appearance.
Inside, the Golf is a genuine time capsule. The two-tone black and beige seating, simple dashboard, original-style steering wheel and period switchgear evoke an era when Volkswagen's reputation was built upon straightforward engineering and quality construction. The upholstery presents particularly well, with the seats retaining their distinctive period appearance. The carpets, door cards, headlining and dashboard are also well preserved, while the remarkably uncluttered interior is a refreshing reminder of how simple motoring once was.
Beneath the bonnet, the engine compartment presents cleanly and retains the pleasingly straightforward appearance associated with these early Golfs. The engine and surrounding components appear largely unaltered, with the overall presentation consistent with a car that has spent much of its life in careful storage rather than regular use.
The luggage compartment is similarly tidy, retaining its practical original arrangement and period trim. These details help make this Golf especially appealing, offering the next custodian a rare opportunity to experience the character of an early Mk1 in a condition that has not been obscured by extensive modernisation.
Naturally, following 34 years off the road, the Golf will require recommissioning before returning to regular use. The fuel system, brakes, tyres, cooling system and other mechanical components should be carefully inspected and attended to as necessary. It is therefore offered as a preserved, long-stored vehicle rather than one ready for immediate road use.
For the Volkswagen enthusiast, collector or anyone with an appreciation for beautifully preserved everyday classics, this is a particularly exciting discovery.
