The Jaguar XJ-S (later called XJS) is a luxury grand tourer that was produced and marketed by the British car manufacturer Jaguar Cars from 1975 to 1996, in coupe, solid-profile, and full convertible versions. There were three different iterations, with a final production total of 115.413 units over a period of twenty years and seven months. Originally developed using the platform of the then-current XJ sedan, the XJ-S was known for its prominent rear suspension. The early styling was partly the work of Jaguar's aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer - one of the first designers to apply advanced aero principles to cars - but Sayer died in 1970, before the design was completed. The final version, produced from 1991 to 1996, was manufactured after Jaguar was acquired by Ford, which implemented numerous changes and dropped the hyphen from the name, causing Jaguar's longest-running model to be marketed simply as the XJS.
