The Citroën DS is a car model from the French brand Citroën. In French, the name is pronounced 'deesse', which means 'goddess'. The nickname 'goddess of the road' is also derived from this. The DS was conceived by designers who had complete creative freedom and wanted to demonstrate what they were capable of. This led to a unique product that achieved the status of a national prestige object. The DS was presented at the Paris Motor Show on October 6, 1955, and was a sensation ('La Bombe Citroën'). In the preceding decade, with the exception of the death of Stalin in 1953, French newspapers had devoted more lines to this event than to any other news item. The car featured various characteristics and applied technologies that had not previously been combined in a single vehicle. Allegedly, 12.000 orders were placed for the new car on the first day, and by the end of the week, this number had risen to as many as 80.000, a figure that caused the factory major production problems.
