The Ferrari 456 marked a welcome return to the traditional front-engined V12 grand tourer when it appeared in the early 1990s. Pininfarina gave the four-seat coupé an exceptionally elegant shape, with its long bonnet, beautifully restrained lines and pop-up headlamps carrying echoes of the legendary 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Ferrari itself describes the 456 as a modern interpretation of the Daytona theme, combining genuine four-seat accommodation with the performance expected of a Maranello V12 Ferrari.

The GTA added something particularly appropriate to the 456's grand-touring character: an automatic transmission. This was no overdrive-equipped conventional automatic, but a purpose-developed electronically controlled four-speed automatic gearbox, designed to adapt its operation to different driving styles. Ahead of it sits Ferrari's magnificent 5,474cc 65-degree V12, producing 442hp and 550Nm of torque. Ferrari quoted 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds and a maximum speed in excess of 298km/h – serious performance even by modern standards.

First registered in the UK on 1st September 1999, this car is an especially striking example, finished in classic Ferrari red and complemented by an equally dramatic red leather interior. The five-spoke Ferrari alloy wheels, quad exhaust outlets and wonderfully period pop-up headlights complete what remains one of Pininfarina's most elegant modern Ferrari designs.

Perhaps more importantly for a V12 Ferrari of this era, this example is accompanied by a substantial specialist maintenance history. The odometer currently displays just 32,110 miles, with the accompanying records showing a particularly convincing progression through the car's earlier life.

Its recorded servicing begins in September 2000 at 7,928 miles with Stratstone of Wilmslow, followed by Maranello Sales Ltd at 8,600 miles in 2001, 9,769 miles in 2002 and 13,012 miles in December 2003, when the cambelts were also renewed. Maranello attended to the car again in December 2004 at 17,056 miles.

The history continues with Emblem Sportscars in April 2008 at 21,511 miles, when the cambelts and auxiliary belts were renewed, along with the automatic gearbox fluid and filter. Verdi For Ferraris subsequently serviced the car in September 2010 at 27,194 miles, while Mike & Graham Reeder attended to it in September 2014 at 29,834 miles. That visit again included cambelt replacement together with an automatic gearbox oil and filter change.

More recent expenditure has concentrated on improving and sorting the car rather than simply routine servicing. In May 2024 work included replacement of the brake master cylinder and bleeding of the braking system, diagnostic checks, investigation of the heating system, removal of the heater module for repair, attention to the door and interior trim, investigation of a door-light fault and replacement of the handbrake cable.

This was followed in September 2024 by a programme of further improvement work. The doors and locks were adjusted to operate correctly, the dashboard and centre console were stripped and rebuilt, the clock bulb was replaced and both door cards were removed. Correctly sized replacement front speakers were sourced and fitted, while the heater control panel was removed, prepared and refinished with a replacement graphic before being refitted. The two invoices for this period total £2,832.74.

The Ferrari has had eight former keepers, with the current keeper having owned it for approximately three and a half years. It is accompanied by a particularly useful collection of supporting material including invoices, previous MOT certificates, its Ferrari book pack, Ferrari Owners' Club material and photographs.

Visually, it presents very well indeed. The Rosso exterior suits the Pininfarina shape beautifully and the bodywork appears generally very good, while the five-spoke Ferrari alloys and large branded brake calipers give just enough indication of the performance available beneath the elegant bodywork. The red leather cabin is arguably even more special, covering not simply the seats but much of the dashboard, centre console, doors and carpets, and presents attractively with the expected light signs of use.

With only 32,110 miles displayed, an MOT running until April 2027 and a history containing repeated attention from recognised Ferrari specialists, including documented cambelt changes, this is a particularly appealing example of Ferrari's great V12 four-seat grand tourer. The vendor reports that it drives well, and its combination of restrained Pininfarina styling, naturally aspirated V12 power and genuine long-distance ability makes the 456 GTA a very different proposition from the more overtly sporting Ferraris of its period.
